Depression in artistes attributed to competition and high expectations – Psychiatrist
Celebrity mental health issues have been discussed by Dr. Emmanuel Azusong, a psychiatrist at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.
He claims that celebrities who experience depression may see a drop in their creative output and experience stress in their relationships with colleagues.

Dr. Azusong, who was speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning Show, attributed the depression of musicians to the fierce competition amongst them in the music business as well as the pressure to succeed.
“The greatest music might not come from a depressed celebrity. Relationship problems between a depressed celebrity and his manager or other coworkers would persist.
You know that there is a lot of competition for celebrities. They have a great deal of expectations,” he stated.

He emphasised that, rather than being based on the celebrities’ own abilities, these expectations are usually based on comparisons with others, and if they are not met, they can lead to depressive and insecure feelings.
“A person’s expectations are sometimes dependent on other people rather than being grounded in their own abilities. He stated that individuals may experience depression if their expectations are not fulfilled.
