You can’t fight foreign music – Shatta Wale to #PlayGhana initiators

The #PlayGhana campaign, which aims to prioritise and promote the consumption of Ghanaian music over foreign tunes, has been mocked by well-known dancehall artist Charles Nii Armah Mensah, better known by his stage name Shatta Wale, on social media.

Recall that on Thursday, December 14, 2023, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, in association with the Creative Arts Agency and a few key players in the Ghanaian music scene, introduced the #PlayGhana campaign.

In advance of the Christmas “detty December” festivities, when many expatriates spend their holidays in Ghana, this project seeks to raise awareness of Ghanaian music throughout the nation.

On Sunday, December 17, 2023, Shatta made the statement that artists are powerless to stop the importation of foreign music into the nation in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The “Melissa” hitmaker thinks that 10% of international music will eclipse Ghana as a whole.

Shatta went on to say that the competition among Ghanaian crooners is impeding the music industry’s development.

“Today, I woke up to inform you that you cannot resist foreign music. He wrote, “A nation filled with such intense jealousy when it is not them fighting on the front lines.”
