“Reggae music belongs to Ghanaians as much as it belongs to Jamaicans” – Stonebwoy

Stonebwoy has reaffirmed his assertion that Ghana, in particular, is where reggae music originated.

During his acceptance speech at the 25th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), Stonebwoy highlighted the fact that reggae is not just a Caribbean genre; Ghana’s historical involvement in the transatlantic slave trade serves as evidence to support this claim.

” I just want to say by extension that Reggae music like I was bashed for it in Jamaica, I said it has it roots right here in Ghana because out of the 66 forts that took away the slaves..so like I was saying Reggae music belongs to Ghanaians as much as it belongs to Jamaicans”

Stonebwoy’s remarks are consistent with his earlier claim that reggae music is essentially African, made in an interview in 2022. He emphasised that Ghana’s past, including its part in the slave trade, challenges the idea that reggae music is solely a product of Jamaican culture and supports the nation’s claim to the genre.
