During a recent appearance on GTV’s “Spectacle,” Hagar Owusu talked candidly about her encounters with “witchcraft and black magic,” commonly known as “juju” in the UK—a persistent belief that still affects Ghana’s entertainment and arts sector.
Where she lives in the UK, Esther talked about an apparently sudden event where she woke up one morning to find “two bones tied with a red cloth” in her doorway.
She continued, “This is a clear indication that witchcraft, or “juju,” has no physical barriers and that there is no running away from it, contrary to what Africans believe.” This terrifying attempt on her life served as a wake-up call for her to take up arms and defend her ministry and spiritual life.
Esther also related another terrifying story from when she was supposed to give a performance in Columbus, Ohio. The church’s head pastor unexpectedly became ill on the day of the event, and it was later found that crates of eggs—a common symbol of “juju”—had been placed all around the building.
When Esther thought back on these incidents, she gave thanks to God for his unwavering protection, joking that “the witches outside Africa are even more powerful and numerous than those back home.”
