I’m an NPP Member, But Cathedral Funds Must Be Investigated – Former Deputy Finance Minister

Former Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Stephen Amoah has expressed concerns over the financial handling of the stalled National Cathedral project, calling for an investigation into how funds have been utilized.

Speaking on Joy News AM on Thursday, March 13, 2025, Dr. Amoah clarified that he is not opposed to the cathedral itself but shares the concerns of those questioning its financial implications.

“Honestly, I am not against the cathedral because I am a Christian, but I am with those who are raising concerns about how much has gone into our foundation,” he stated.

He emphasized the need for accountability in the project’s finances, urging for a thorough probe. “I think that money should be investigated, and those raising concerns are right, even though I am an NPP member,” he said.

Beyond financial concerns, the lawmaker also questioned the choice of location for the cathedral, which is situated near the International Conference Centre and Parliament.

“I personally think even the location is a problem. With the International Conference Centre and Parliament nearby, they should have considered a different location,” he remarked.

His comments add to the ongoing debates surrounding the National Cathedral project, which was launched in 2017 as a symbol of Ghana’s Christian heritage. While the facility is envisioned to include a large sanctuary, conference spaces, and exhibition areas, it has been criticized for its high costs, funding challenges, and allegations of financial mismanagement.

Many critics argue that the resources allocated to the project could be better spent on pressing national issues such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

With increasing scrutiny, Dr. Amoah’s call for an investigation adds weight to demands for greater transparency in the handling of public funds related to the cathedral.
