Ras Kuuku claims that by displaying his award plaque in several ghettos around the nation in 2020, he popularised the yearly award programme.

The media took notice when Ras Kuuku, who is renowned for his intense performances and dedication to the genre, was declared the winner of the prestigious Best Reggae/Dancehall Artist of the Year award.

In an open conversation with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM’s Daybreakhitz show, the founder of Poum Music shared, “I’m the only artist who has made the Telecel Ghana Music Award (TGMA) formally VGMA popular. After winning the award, I took my plaque to the streets and ghettos, showing it to the people. I wanted them to realise the potential of perseverance and hard work. Encouraging others and bringing the award closer to the people was more important than it was about me. Additionally, they shaped who I am now.”
