I Gave My Song To Abeiku Santana But He Didn’t Play It – Grace Ashy

Grace Ashy, one of Ghana’s favorite Gospel legends, born Grace Appiah Kube in the Brong Ahaful region of Ghana has recounted how renowned broadcaster, Abeokuta Santana disappointed her when she was emerging as an artiste.  She started music as a vibrant young lady in the early 2000s where she released Adea Yesu.

Grace Ashy, who was a house hold name in the 2000s was Agyemang Prempeh’s guest on the Legends show on TV XYZ.

Grace was the first of her mother’s children, but eighteenth of her father, who had a polygamous family.  She advised viewers to treat their foster children well due to the experience of living with her stepmother after the divorce of her parents, which came with restrictions in all angles.

Speaking on how her music career began, the veteran singer said “I started singing in church when I moved to stay with my grandmother.  When I came to Accra, I started a church with Rev. Michael Osei Bonsu in Adenta but started going to Gospel Light with my late husband, where I was the lead singer.  Through this, I started writing music. I released my debut single, ‘Adea Yesu’ in the year 2000”.

Grace Ashy also gave a special mention to Richard, a friend who’s now a pastor took.  He took young Grace to his studio to record her first song.

The ‘I Am In Your Presence’ singer went on to reveal a very shocking news.  She said “I gave the song to Abeiku Santana, but he didn’t play it”.  She was frustrated and disappointed in the presenter, but was motivated to invest some time and resources in her craft to prove such personalities wrong.

The veteran Gospel singer also revealed that she had nothing from the GFA after all her association with them.  “His Excellency J. A. Kuffuor, the then president of Ghana told the people in the helms of affairs of the GFA to take good care of me but they didn’t heed to it.  They don’t have any excuses to treat me with disregard because I know they had sponsorship for other organizations”, the celebrated singer added.

She disclosed that henceforth, she’ll have to be contracted before doing another song for Black Stars when she is approached.  Also, she has always been a fan of football and sports in general and she supports Ghanaian Football Club, Aduana Stars.
