Ghanaian music producer Kwaku Nsia Boama, better known by his stage name Flowking Stone, has described how he “abandoned” artists in Ghana in order to work in the Kumawood industry.

He described how music producers typically manage the financial aspects of music promotion, such as paying for radio slots and DJs, in an interview with Accra-based 3FM.

However, many of these producers switched from making music to making movies as a result of the drop in CD sales and the emergence of Kumawood.

Producers used to fund and release our songs back when we used to perform on the radio. They would pay DJs for the songs they brought them. At a point when Kumawood was at its height, the producers left to pursue films, and music was not as successful as it once was, “he mentioned.

According to Flowking Stone, musicians are now responsible for covering the costs of digital advertisements, radio and TV promos, dancers, and other music-related expenses.

“A notable alteration occurred. They could not sell CDs, the internet was not yet established, and artists were having problems with producers and other issues. The rapper said, “Record labels have only recently begun to step in; for a long time, artists had to fund themselves.”

Although they are expensive, he pointed out that platforms such as TikTok have aided in the promotion of music.

Since the introduction of TikTok, artists have begun to gain notoriety. Facebook existed even before TikTok. Facebook used to allow you to post videos and have them seen by all of your fans, but things have changed. If you did not pay for an advertisement, they limited the audience to just 5% of your followers. We began leaving tips for radio DJs, TV stations, and club DJs. It is funny because TikTok is the newest thing and has higher prices than other platforms. This makes the process difficult now. It might not go far without assistance from radio friends, even if you go viral on TikTok, “he said.

With collaborations with musicians like King Paluta, Mr. Drew, and Morphty, Flowking Stone is currently promoting his album “Decision.”
