Guru petitions UG Judicial Board to halt SRC elections after his disqualification
The popular Ghanaian musician Guru, also known as Maradona Yeboah Adjei, has filed a lawsuit to contest his disqualification from the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) elections in 2024.

The UGSRC Electoral Commission disqualified Guru on August 16, 2024, citing his non-resident status as a violation of Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument’s (CI 24) constitutional requirements.
If even one member is not eligible, this clause renders the candidate’s entire ticket void.
Guru has responded by submitting a petition to the UGSRC Judicial Board requesting an order to pause the August 26, 2024, elections in the interim.
The petition questions the constitutionality and fairness of barring non-resident students from running in the SRC elections, particularly given that the SRC’s decisions have an effect on the entire student body.

“Note that the Council, acting on behalf of the Plaintiff/Applicant, is pleading for an order for an interim injunction to prevent the Respondent, the Defendant, their servants, agents, and any individuals they may have authorized from proceeding with the election until the suit’s final outcome is known,” the petition stated.
In his petition, Guru claims that the UGSRC Electoral Commission’s ruling was unconstitutional and that the Judicial Board, not the vetting committee, is responsible for interpreting and enforcing constitutional provisions.
In addition, the petition requests that Guru’s eligibility to run for UGSRC President be declared, and it asks the Electoral Commission to be ordered to postpone the elections until the issue is settled.
