‘Brag’ wasn’t a jab at anybody – Sarkodie clarifies

Rapper Sarkodie from Ghana has discussed the attention his song “Brag,” which features multiple Nigerian musicians and Black Sherif among them, has generated.

Sarkodie’s song “Brag,” which she released earlier in May 2024, prompted a rap battle between Ghana and Nigeria.

Sarkodie mentioned Nigerian celebrities Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy in the song, which is taken from his upcoming mixtape “The Championship.”

In response to Sarkodie’s allegations, Davido backed his musician, Dremo, after the song’s release.

When Sarkodie disregarded Dremo’s response, though, a number of Ghanaian rappers stood up for Sarkodie and confronted Dremo.

Tracks from Don Itchi, Wan Nana, Phrimpong, and CJ Biggerman, as well as Lyrical Joe’s “1960” response—which alluded to Nigeria’s year of independence—led to an epic lyrical brawl.

After all the commotion, Sarkodie laughed about it and said he was grateful for the publicity, telling VoxAfrica that this kind of natural PR is great.

Sarkodie clarified that he was referencing musicians such as Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid to demonstrate his longevity in the music industry rather than to take shots.

Since these musicians are not rappers, he clarified, they are not his rivals, and he has the utmost respect for them—especially Black Sherif, whom he regards as his boy.

It is excellent PR, which is why I adore it. Wizkid, David, and Burna are people I would never jab at because I only want to jab at rappers. Rappers, that is not who they are.

“These are the best people to use as a reference, and I was just discussing with rappers how long I have been there. Wizkid, Burna Boy, Black Sherif, Asake, and Davido are all well-known to everyone.

“It is absolutely true. When Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Black Sherif entered, I was present on the scene. They only serve as indicators of my duration there. It does not involve making fun of anyone. These artists are truly remarkable. My boy is Black Sherif. Think I would poke a stick at Black Sherif? No,” he replied.

Additionally, the rapper expressed his enjoyment of the energy and dialogue the song has generated, especially since it raises awareness for hip-hop, a genre he believes has been neglected for a while.

“We could not accomplish this even if we took the time to plan this PR. The greatest type of PR is organic PR. Since hip-hop has not been a topic of conversation in a while, I am really proud that there is energy out there,” Sarkodie remarked.

Sarkodie went on to say that at first he was not interested in clearing up the confusion because he appreciated the momentum it was generating for his next project, “The Championship,” which is scheduled for release on May 24, 2024.

To be completely honest, though, I like the energy that is there, so I would not even want to clarify this. This is untrue, but we are lovin’ it, you know, and a lot of trends are making next Friday look really lovely, in my opinion, because people want to hear about the project,” he remarked.

He declared that he would rather poke fun at other rappers than at singers who have attained sustained success.

Although I am really proud, I am not going to poke fun at anyone. Rappers are the only people I can make fun of. And that does not bother me because I can give it my all with that. “And the greatest insult of all will be that I did not include any rappers because these singers are the most well-known and consistent,” he remarked.
