Akua Donkor, Ghana Freedom Party presidential candidate, passes away

Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra.

Her family confirmed her death on Monday, October 28, though details surrounding her passing remain undisclosed. The news was shared by a family member on Tuesday, October 29, during an interview with Citi FM.

Known for her outspoken nature and commitment to advocating for farmers and women’s rights, Akua Donkor was a notable figure in Ghanaian politics. She gained recognition for her grassroots approach and made multiple bids for the presidency despite limited resources. Her persistence led her to contest in two previous elections and secure the third spot on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 presidential race.

Akua Donkor’s political journey began when she was elected as the Assemblywoman for Herman, marking her first step towards presidential ambitions. Although her independent bid in 2012 was disqualified by the Electoral Commission, she supported Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) afterward. She faced another disqualification in 2016 following a fire incident at the GFP’s headquarters.
