Banton bemoaned the fact that, in spite of its African origins, Afrobeat has departed from its capacity to effect genuine change and from the revolutionary spirit personified by figures such as Fela Kuti and Lucky Dube. Noting that the genre has not respected the cultural significance of reggae music, he also accused Reggaeton of stealing reggae elements without acknowledging their original source.

Reflecting on his time in Africa, Banton expressed dissatisfaction with the Afrobeat movement’s rejection of reggae’s historical roots and identification with other influences. He emphasized that even though Afrobeat and reggaeton have gained popularity across the globe, they still lack the soul and profundity necessary to relate to the struggles that African nations face.
