A Real Producer Must Know More Than Beat Making – Master Garzy
Renowned Ghanaian music producer and audio engineer, Benjamin Mensah Garzy, professionally known as Mix Master Garzy, has shed light on the deeper responsibilities of a music producer, pointing out that true production goes well beyond simply creating beats.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz, Garzy highlighted the wide range of skills that a genuine music producer must possess.
“Before you call yourself a producer, you have to know how to produce — how to make beats, how to engineer audio, meaning proper recording as a recording engineer. You need to know how to mix, how to direct, how to write, maybe even how to sing. All of these are part of being a full producer,” he explained.
He clarified that while some individuals may specialize in areas like beat making or mixing, the ability to manage the entire production process is what defines a complete producer. According to Garzy, it is this versatility that has helped shape his identity in the industry.
“Where I’m coming from, I was fortunate to learn all of these skills together, and that’s why I’m ‘Mix Master Garzy,’” he said.
The award-winning producer also encouraged young talents in the music scene to invest time in learning the craft thoroughly. He believes many upcoming producers confuse roles, which limits their potential.
“Some people are just beat makers, but because they can record, they assume they can mix too. It’s time they understand the difference,” he added, urging a more disciplined and well-rounded approach to music production.
