Contemporary artists think they are helping us by sampling our music – Producer Kwame Mickey

Ace producer, Kwame Mickey has stated that most of the young artistes believe they are doing the veteran musicians a favour by sampling their music and reckoned this may be the reason they do not go through the right process.

In a chat with Remedi Entertainment’s Sharon Onella, Kwame Mickey indicated that most often he has to track down these artistes for the right thing to be done. Kwame added that he has no problem with music sampling if the artiste will go through the right channel.

“If a business should use your music for an advert, they must pay but they think they are helping you. When a musician samples your lyrics and adds them to his own, he thinks he is reviving or making you popular. Recently, I fought with Stonebwoy and he had to come with his lawyers to pay,” he said.

“As I’m speaking, Kweku Darlington is begging me. He used Asebu Amanfi’s ‘sika kankan’ for his song but even if I ask him for money, he is not ready to pay. We must enjoy the fruit of our labour but all we have is the name but the artistes are suffering,” Kwame Appiah added.

According to Kwame, he has sent a bill to the ‘sika aba fie’ hitmaker but “he wants me to rather check the streaming platform to see how the song is doing. I’m not the one to watch over your work.”

Kwame Mickey has produced over 70 albums with about 40 musicians in all. He has worked with Amakye Dede, his brother Kaakyire Kwame Appiah, Cecilia Marfo, Dr Paa Bobo, Uncle Ato, Paa Solo and many others.
